Main program window

As shown in Figure 2-5, AthTek NetWalk’s user interface has several key components:

  • The toolbar provides you easy access to AthTek NetWalk’s main functions.
  • The menus provide you with access to additional AthTek NetWalk commands, including those used to open and save trace files, change the currently selected adapter, reset the Monitor’s counters, start and stop capture, access the online help files, and so on. In general, the buttons in the toolbar provide access to the features you will use most of the time; the menus provide access to additional complementary functions.
  • There are three kinds of pages in the main workspace: Netwalk tab monitor Main program windowMonitor page; Netwalk tab capture Main program windowCapture page; Netwalk tab trace Main program windowTrace file pages.

In addition to these main components, AthTek NetWalk provides valuable information in its title bar and status bar:

  • The title bar indicates the adapter AthTek NetWalk is currently monitoring.
  • The caption bar (the bar at the bottom of the display) indicates:
    • The amount of time the current monitoring session has been in progress (Duration).
    • The date and time AthTek NetWalk started gathering monitoring statistics (Start Time).
    • The number of packets current monitoring session has seen (Packets).
    • A real-time Network Activity LED that provides a quick indication of the utilization of network traffic AthTek NetWalk is seeing.
    • The Link Status LED provides status of the adapter currently monitoring. Red indicates the link is down; green indicates the link is up and active.
