Application layer

AthTek NetWalk provides detailed analysis for many important network applications, such as HTTP, DNS, SMTP, POP3 and applications defined in Application Manager. For each supported application type, flows, providing analysis and statistics that enable you to troubleshoot network problems as they occur. You can view information for a specific flow, or for an application type as a whole.

For each supported application type, AthTek NetWalk tracks Flows, Summary statistics and some other useful information for built in application protocols such as Resolved Addresses for DNS, Visited Pages for HTTP.

As shown in Figure 6-2, Application layer displays consist of the following panels:

The Applications panel

The Applications panel lists each enabled applications configured in Application Protocol Manager. You can select an application type as a whole to view corresponding statistics in the Flows panel, Summary panel and Protocol Specific panel (if any).

Note: The item with green-arrow icon in Applications panel indicates corresponding Application protocol is active.

The Summary panel

The Summary panel provides tables of statistics describing and quantifying the traffic from the selected application type. AthTek NetWalk provides counts for traffic totals (packets, bytes, utilization, bandwidth, and so on), as well as application-specific packet type counters. For example, the Summary panel for HTTP includes counters for URIs, kinds of errors, and so on. The exact packet types counted depend on the selected application type.

The Flows panel

The Flows panel lists each detected flow for the selected application in the Applications panel. If an application type is selected in the Applications panel (for example, FTP), the Flows panel shows all detected flows for that application type. Figure 6-3 shows a sample Flows panel for HTTP.

The Protocol Specific panel

The Protocol Specific panel provides additional information base on the protocol selected in Protocol panel. Figure 6-4 shows a sample Protocol Specific panel for HTTP.
